Abstract:

Background and Aim: Learning and memory defect occurs following chronic diabetes with uncontrolled blood glucose. Ginkgo leaf extract improves brain blood flow. Also it contains antioxidant components and has shown beneficial effects in neurological diseases. In this study we investigated the effects of Ginkgo leaf extract on spatial memory impairment and hippocampal neuronal loss caused by diabetes. Material and Methods: This experimental study included 28 adult male Sparague-Dawley rats. The rats were made diabetic by injection of streptozotocin (STZ: 60 mg/kg). Ginkgo leaf extract (40 mg/kg) was administrated orally every day for two weeks and its effects on memory impairment and hippocampal tissue damage were investigated. Spatial memory was assessed in Morris water maze for four days. Then, the brains of the animals were extracted and after tissue staining hippocampal tissue damage were evaluated by neuronal count. Results: Latency to find the platform in water maze were significantly increased in STZ group compared to that in the control group (p<0.05). While, administration of the Ginkgo extract in STZ injected animals significantly reduced the latency to find the platform (p<0.05). In addition, STZ reduced hippocampal neuronal count (p<0.001) and administration of the Ginkgo extract in STZ injected animals significantly improved hippocampal neuronal loss (p<0.01). Conclusion: Ginkgo leaf extract significantly improved spatial memory impairment and hippocampal neuronal loss, induced by diabetes. Keywords: Learning, Morris water maze, Neuronal count, Neuropathy. Received: Dec 8, 2017 Accepted: Apr 9, 2018

Antihyperglycemic Effect of Ginkgo biloba Extract in Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes in Rats

The Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) has been reported to have a wide range of health benefits in traditional Chinese medicine. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antihyperglycemic effects of GBE on streptozotocin- (STZ-) induced diabetes in rats. Diabetes was induced in male Wistar rats by the administration of STZ (60 mg/kg b.w.) intraperitoneally. GBE (100, 200, and 300 mg/kg b.w.) was adm...

A study of the effect of Ginkgo biloba extract on MK801 induced forgetfulness in rats

Introduction: Many people with amnesia would like to try herbal therapies. Ginkgo biloba is one of the most popular herbs which is used to treat amnesia. The beneficial effects of this plant, however, has not been scientifically assessed yet. Although, there have been some reports on the memory enhancement effect of Ginkgo biloba, the mechanism of its action is not yet explained well. Consi...

The effect of intracerebroventricular administration of insulin on memory impairment-induced by scopolamine in male rats

Introduction: Cholinergic neuronal deficiency is one of the main causes of Alzheimer's pathology, which leads to learning and memory impairment. Scopolamine is a muscarinic cholinergic antagonist commonly used to induce Alzheimer's disease (AD). Insulin also regulates learning and memory function. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the effect of central administration of insulin on pa...

Ginkgo biloba extract diminishes stress-induced memory deficits in rats

Exposure to chronic restraint stress in rats and psychosocial stress in humans has been shown to alter cognitive functions such as learning and memory and has been linked to the pathophysiology of mood and anxiety disorders. Antianxiety or sedative agents used in the management of stress have several disadvantages and undesired effects. Therefore, in this study, we investigated efficacy of a na...
